Action learning

What is it?

Action Learning solves problems and develops leaders simultaneously because it’s simple rules force participants to think critically and work collaboratively. Action Learning is particularly effective for solving complex problems that may appear unsolvable. It elevates the norms, the collaboration, the creativity, and the courage of groups.

The Action Learning coach (WIAL certified) assists group members in reflecting on the advancement of their group functioning, rather than on their problem solving. In this way, Action Learning participants become effective leaders as they solve difficult problems.

Typically, as an Action Learning Coach, I would support an organization by determining difficult problems that need solving and do this in groups of c. 6 people. The two essential components are 1) tackling the problem, and 2) focus on your learning goal.

There are two basic rules; anyone can ask a question of anyone, and you can only speak in response to a question.

How might you develop it?

Developing an action learning program involves several key steps. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

  1. Define the problem or challenge: Identify the specific problem or challenge that the action learning program will address. This could be a real-world issue facing the organization, a strategic goal that needs to be achieved, or a development opportunity for participants

  2. Form a team: Assemble a group of participants who will work together to address the problem or challenge. Ideally, the group should be diverse in terms of skills, experience, and perspectives

  3. Identify resources: Determine what resources will be needed to support the action learning program, including materials, equipment, and any external expertise or support

  4. Establish ground rules: Set clear expectations for how the group will work together, including communication norms, decision-making processes, and how conflicts will be resolved

  5. Develop an action plan: Work with the group to develop a detailed action plan for addressing the problem or challenge. The plan should outline specific goals, timelines, and milestones, as well as how progress will be measured and evaluated

  6. Take action: Implement the action plan, using a range of problem-solving techniques and strategies to address the problem or challenge

  7. Reflect and learn: Throughout the process, encourage the group to reflect on their experiences and learning, and to apply those insights to future actions. Regular check-ins and evaluations can help the group stay on track and adjust their approach as needed

By following these steps, you can develop an effective action learning program that enables participants to learn through questioning, and to apply their insights to many other challenges they face.
